The Story Behind the Craft

Sand & Slate began as a natural extension of how I’ve always worked—through making, refining, and following curiosity wherever it leads.

Creating has never been static for me. It’s an evolving process—one that allows space to explore new materials, develop new skills, and continually build on what came before. This work brings that process into focus, shaping it into something intentional and lasting.

But just as important is what happens after a piece leaves my hands. I create to be used, to be lived with—to become part of someone’s space in a way that feels personal and considered. Knowing something I’ve made brings warmth, calm, or connection into someone else’s day is what gives the work meaning.

This is a practice of building—of skill, of process, and of something of my own—shaped as much by what I make as by the way it’s received.

A Practice of Rhythm and Form

My hands have always been my primary tools. My path hasn’t followed a straight line, but rather a quiet accumulation of skill.

My process is immersive and cyclical; I return to a material again and again until its behavior becomes intuitive.

From the slow, 48-hour fermentation of Tacita to refining the balance of a coconut-apricot wax blend, or shaping polymer into stone-like forms, each piece is guided by curiosity and precision, held with an awareness of how it will be lived with.

What guides each piece

We create slowly and with intention—prioritizing quality over quantity, and care over convenience. Each piece is made in small batches, allowing space for attention, refinement, and a more considered approach to craft.

SLOW CRAFT

We are guided by a respect for natural materials and the quiet beauty they bring into a space. Wherever possible, we prioritize thoughtfully sourced ingredients and materials that align with our values of simplicity, longevity, and everyday use.

THOUGHTFUL MATERIALS

We believe in transparency, not perfection. As a small business, we are always learning, refining, and evolving. Every decision — from materials to methods — is made with intention and a commitment to doing better where we can.

HONEST PROCESS

Our process is intentionally hands-on. Not because it’s the fastest way, but because it’s the most meaningful. We believe that the care put into creating something becomes part of the piece itself — something you can feel when it becomes part of your home.
